MARCHE TRIOMPHALE
(1943)

Imperial Japanese Army during World War II

Akira Ifukube completed his Marche Triomphale for the Japanese military in May 1943. Little is known about the origins and history of the work.

The score was rediscovered in 2007 in the home of Kiwami Ifukube, the composer's son. The title page of the handwritten manuscript reads: "Marche Triomphale par "radiocast" - this suggests that the work was intended for radio performance . Whether or not it was actually performed on the radio or in any capacity is not known.

March Triomphale is scored for an orchestra; however, the orchestration within the manuscript is incomplete.

In 2007 the Japanese composer Shigeyuki Imai was chosen to reconstruct the score. Imai first made a piano reduction then made an arrangement for wind orchestra. This reconstruction for wind orchestra will be included on a forthcoming Japanese recording to be released in 2008.
