THREE
LULLABIES AMONG
THE NATIVE TRIBES ON THE ISLAND OF SAKHALIN (1949)

Gilyak
woman and child, circa 1920
Ifukube stayed in Sakhalin while he was a student at Hokkaido Imperial University. In Sakhalin, he was able to observe and study the lives of the aborigines. He also collected the original tongues after he had a chance to look over recordings of the performing arts of aborigines in Sakhalin in during World War II.
Three Lullabies Among the Native Tribes on the Island of Sakhalin is the fruit of his work.
First lullaby: "bu :lu bu :lu" (Evenk/Kilin tribes) This gentle melody is sung in Evenki.
Second lullaby: "buppun lu:" (Gilyak tribes) This piece is sung in Gilyak.
Third lullaby: "umpari :ja :ja" (Oroke/Orokko/Uilta tribes) A somewhat upbeat lullaby, sung in Uilta, a language related to Evenki.
