VIOLIN CONCERTO NO. 2
(1978)

Takeshi Kobayashi and Akira Ifukube

Akira Ifukube wrote his second Violin Concerto in 1978. The work was commissioned by the renown Japanese violinist Takeshi Kobayashi. It is in one continuous movement and usually lasts about 23 minutes.

Kobaysahi asked that the piece begin on the G string of the violin and also asked that the fast section be reserved for the very end. Ifukube accommodated Kobayashi's requests.

Violin Concerto no. 2 is generally more restrained than Ifukube's brilliant Rapsodia Concertante (Violin Concerto no. 1). Brimming with exotic lyricism, Violin Concerto no. 2 is mostly a calm, conservative work until it builds to moderate intensity in its closing pages.
